Benchmark Genetics Chile completed the organic egg certification process in accordance with the production method standard of the European Union. Benchmark Genetics has become the first genetic supplier in Chile to have this certificate and make this product available to the market.

The certification process was carried out by the international company Control Union on December 20 at the facilities that the company operates in Curacalco, and on January 26 at the facilities in Ensenada. In both audits, no deviations were recorded, which allowed them to quickly obtain the certificate.

“This certification was born from a specific requirement of our client Cooke Chile that embarked us on a uniquely collaborative and learning process to achieve this challenging common goal. We celebrate the interest of companies that share our vision of sustainable and low-impact aquaculture,” said Pablo Mazo, general manager at Benchmark Genetics Chile.

Benchmark Genetics aims to implement the same standards that it offers to its clients from its productions in Norway and Iceland. “We recognize the entire team that participated in the implementation of this standard, which had an extraordinary performance. It is not only a great milestone for our company, but also for Chilean salmon farms since it is framed in compliance with requirements focused on less impact of our activity, which only raise the standard of fish production with a marked sustainability orientation,” said Jan Emil Johannessen, head of Benchmark Genetics.

The organic broodstock has already spawned and eggs are in the incubation stage in units specifically enabled for this purpose. The company plans to deliver the first batch to Cooke in April, has scheduled a second batch of certified organic eggs for September and will continue with a stable quarterly production regime in the future.
