Saudi Arabia has developed a VISION 2030 plan to diversify the country’s economy and modernize society, which includes a range of reforms and initiatives, among which are the reduction of dependence on imported food and increase local production. Within just seven years, from 2015 to 2022, domestic aquaculture production increased by 400%, from around 32,000 MT to almost 120,000 MT of shrimp, marine and freshwater fish.

The country wants to produce more aquaculture products in the Red Sea and plans to establish several fish and shrimp hatcheries as well as an Algae Technology Development Unit. The implementation of a national program for the accreditation of all aquaculture facilities in accordance with the standards of the General Services Administration and the aquaculture policy (Saudi Mark for Quality of Aquaculture) and feasibility studies for new commercial aquaculture projects are also projected.

SIMEC Expo aims to promote domestic and foreign investment in the aquaculture sector as well as showcase state-of-the-art marine products and cutting-edge aquaculture technologies through an exhibition area and workshops.
