Benchmark Genetics USA (Spring Genetics) recently completed the construction of its “Broodstock 365 System” project, which will produce tilapia fingerlings and broodstock 365 days a year.
One of the main challenges in the genetic nucleus of Spring Tilapia, located in Miami Florida, was to produce and supply fingerlings and broodstock to its global and local clients throughout the year since during the winter months, the water temperature in South Florida drops to 17°C which prevents fish from breeding. The ideal temperature is 27-30°C.
The “Broodstock 365 System” delivers state-of-the-art technology that allows constant temperature throughout the year, lengthening production cycles, and ensuring the distribution of fingerlings and broodstock during the winter season.
“This will greatly benefit the tilapia farming industry in North America, specifically the U.S. and Canada, as well as Spring Genetics multipliers around the world,” said Hideyoshi Segovia Uno, general manager of Benchmark Genetics USA (Spring Genetics).
The new system also targets biosecurity, animal welfare and harvest automation.
