International shrimp genetics suppliers, Blue Genetics Mexico and Sea Products Development, have merged to create Blue Genetics Global, a new player tailor-made to meet the major challenges in the shrimp industry around the world.

Blue Genetics Mexico, a subsidiary of Groupe Grimaud (a multispecies animal genetic selection company based in France with €490 million of turnover and 2100 employees), specializes in genetic selection for white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), providing high-quality Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) broodstock to the international markets. The company has an outstanding reputation for its fast growth line and its unique resistant “Golden Line”. The company is located in La Paz, Baja California Sur.

Sea Products Development (SPD) is based in Taft, Texas, USA, and is a provider of SPF and selectively bred shrimp genetics to the worldwide aquaculture industry in the form of broodstock and postlarvae. SPD has developed novel systems to produce sustainable shrimp in bio-secure, recirculating aquaculture systems, and provides consulting services to existing and prospective intensive shrimp farms. The competitive advantage of SPD is its unique blend of cutting-edge science, innovative technology, and unparalleled dedication to sustainability. SPD has developed a fast growth “Quantum-G” Line and a resistant “Quantum-R” line.

Both companies merged under Groupe Grimaud, not only to share their experience and build on their strengths, but also to get access to the world’s leading experts in animal genetics, and to the best technologies to increase the efficiency of their R&D.

The new entity will operate under the name Blue Genetics Global and will be headquartered in France. Groupe Grimaud will be the majority shareholder. The merger is with the full support of the existing management of both companies and no change in their structure is planned for the immediate future. Service to customers will continue uninterrupted.

Frédéric Grimaud, president of Groupe Grimaud, said, “I’m very proud of this strategic alliance. The contribution of both parties consolidates a solid leader in shrimp genetics offering a range of outstanding products and tech support to the industry.”

Fred Thurman, chairman and president of SPD, stated that “this combination of resources, talents, and financial strengths, brings forward a very dynamic and synergistic association of companies. This greatly will benefit our customers in many ways.”

Carlos Pineda, executive president of Blue Genetics Global, concluded, “definitely, this merger will enhance the expansion and positioning of Blue Genetics in the world and will delight our customers, many of whom consider our products to be exceptionally performant and wanted us to scale up to better meet their needs.”
