Lighting specialist, Signify, is providing Svaberget Smolt fish farm in Norway with aquaculture grow lights to control the growth and life cycle of land-based farming salmon. The Philips aquaculture solutions are calculated and planned specifically for the size, depth and design of the Svabergen Smolt facility. A patented light spectrum that is optimally designed for salmon helps fish perceive 30% more light and grow quicker.

Svaberget Smolt is jointly owned by Emilsen Fisk and SinkaBergHansen (SBH), two major players in Norway’s Atlantic salmon industry. The Svaberget Smolt facility covers 13,000 square meters. It grows salmon from eggs to fish weighing up to 500 grams each.

“The advantage of this system is that we give the fish the right light intensity at all times. This lighting solution and control system allow us to control the timing of smoltification, which means the salmon can safely grow to post-smolt,” said Elling M. Bøkestad, group manager for hatchery fish at SinkabergHansen.

The Philips aquaculture lights ensure proper distribution of light throughout the tank. The specially designed control system allows Svaberget Smolt to define different lighting plans as required. The farm can configure a lighting scenario to simulate spring lighting conditions – with 12 day hours and 12 night hours – or set the lighting to trigger winter smoltification. The lights are dimmable, to as low as 0.3%, without flickering. The control system can be customized to several pools or tanks, where each can be supervised and controlled separately.

“SinkaBergHansen built the facility and Signify designed a custom lighting solution for us. It has worked well. Both the delivery and installation of the lighting were a success,” says Bøkestad. “We chose Signify to supply us with Philips Aquaculture LED lighting due to both its price and quality. The right lighting is financially favorable.”
