Huon Aquaculture announced that it has awarded a contract to Pure Salmon Technology AS for the design, supply, and installation of a new land-based smolt facility to be constructed in Tasmania, Australia, subject to regulatory approvals. This project marks a significant step in Huon’s ongoing commitment to sustainable aquaculture and operational excellence.

The facility will incorporate cutting-edge Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology, ensuring optimal biosecurity, water efficiency, and fish health. Once operational, the facility will support Huon to grow bigger fish on land, producing smolt. The new facility is designed for flexibility of operations, with high intensity of recirculation and close to zero environmental impact.

Depha Miedecke, Huon’s General Manager of Aquaculture, stated: “Huon has led the way in Tasmania in investments in RAS and the proposed project will more than double our land-based farming capacity. Growing larger fish on land reduces the amount of time our salmon spend in the marine environment and supports stable year-round production. Pending regulatory approvals, we’re looking forward to working with the team at Pure Salmon and local contractors, including electricians and builders, to bring this project to life.”

The integrated approach and technology of Pure Salmon Technology AS, will be instrumental in delivering a facility tailored to Huon’s specific environmental and operational needs. As part of Pure Salmon Technology’s global strategy, Pure Salmon Technology Australia has been established. This office will be led by Patrick Tigges, Operations Director Australia.

This project not only marks our expansion into the Australian market but also showcases the delivery of a facility built around Fixed Bed Bio Reactor (FBBR) technology — a tailored solution for Huon that complements our traditional Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) offering. This project will demonstrate Pure Salmon Technology´s capability to provide flexible, high-performance systems adapted to specific needs, to a key player in global aquaculture market. Our shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and fish welfare makes this a natural and promising partnership.”

Additionally, Stephane Farouze, Founder & Chairman of 8F Asset Management, said: “We are proud that our portfolio company, Pure Salmon Technology, has been selected by Huon Aquaculture for this landmark project. This collaboration highlights the strength of Pure Salmon Technology’s advanced RAS solutions and its ability to deliver sustainable, high-performance systems tailored to the needs of leading aquaculture operators. The expansion into Australia is a strategic milestone in our global roadmap, and we are excited to support a project that reflects our shared commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and long-term value creation. We trust this is just the first step in a long and fruitful partnership with Huon.”

The construction of the new facility is scheduled to commence in Q3 2025, with full commissioning expected in 2027.
