Iceland aquaculture production increases 10% in 2024

The export value of all aquaculture products saw a significant 17% year-on-year increase.

The production of aquaculture products in Iceland reached nearly 54,800 tonnes in 2024, marking a 10% increase from 2023, according to Statistics Iceland. Atlantic salmon constituted the vast majority of this, with 49,300 tonnes produced. Arctic char production amounted to 4,800 tonnes, a 9% decrease, while other species accounted for less than 1,000 tonnes.

The export value of all aquaculture products saw a significant 17% year-on-year increase, reaching ISK 53.8 billion (USD 391.6 million). Salmon products alone accounted for approximately ISK 47.7 billion (USD 347.3 million) of this total.

European aquaculture production data up to the end of 2023 reveals Norway as the dominant salmon producer, exceeding 1.5 million tonnes – ten times more than Scotland, the next largest producer. The Faroe Islands and Iceland follow in the rankings.

Iceland stands out as the leading producer of Arctic char, with around 5,248 tonnes. While rainbow trout farming has become minimal in Iceland, consistent production of rainbow trout has been observed in Italy, France, Spain, Denmark, and Finland in recent years.
