Inverkerry’s hatchery and Smolt unit at Gairloch in Wester Ross, Scotland, operated by Hendrix Genetics, has been upgraded to organically produce around 1.2 million young salmon each year.

Hendrix Genetics’ major site upgrade directly supports five local jobs and secures the hatchery a long-term future by supplying its partner Organic Sea Harvest with quality smolts. Organic Sea Harvest is certified organic by the Soil Association, which ensures the highest levels of animal welfare and fish health.

Mairi Gougeon, Cabinet Secretary for Rural and Islands Affairs, said that “this significant investment in new facilities in Inverkerry is another example of how the Scottish aquaculture industry is championing and driving innovation.

Tavish Scott, managing director of Salmon Scotland, said that “the successful partnership between Organic Sea Harvest and Hendrix Genetics helps deliver on our sustainability promise to be the global leader in providing nutritious food produced in the most responsible way.”

Situated at the end of the River Kerry, the Inverkerry site was first built in 1984, with upgrading commencing in 2020.
