The Norwegian government will start working on a new proposal that will review the entire permit system for aquaculture.

“There is a need for a thorough review of all the various permits for aquaculture. The goal is for us to put in place a more holistic system that ensures sustainable development and contributes to creating value along the coast. Norway must be a world leader in aquaculture, and we must prepare ourselves to meet both current and future challenges,” says Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Cecilie Myrseth.

The aquaculture proposal will build on the work done by the Aquaculture Committee, which submitted its report in September 2023. The report is now being consulted, and the deadline for giving input is January 2.

“The aquaculture committee has carried out a thorough review of the permit system in the aquaculture industry. We will follow up on the investigation and consultation input when we start work on a new notification,” said Myrseth.

“The aquaculture industry is developing at an impressive pace. It has been almost ten years since a report on aquaculture was submitted to the parliament, so it is certainly time for a new review,” said the Minister.
