New bivalve hatchery R&D center opens in Portugal

The Portuguese company Oceano Fresco opened its new world-class Biomarine Center in Nazaré, Portugal. The new center integrates a bivalve hatchery, R&D laboratories and offices and is committed to innovation, breeding and production of European native clams species Ruditapes decussatus and Venerupis corrugata.

The center, together with a 100-hectare sea farm in the Algarve region, will apply advanced selection and breeding methods to native European clam species of high nutritional and market value. 

The center was inaugurated by the Portuguese Minister of the Sea, Ricardo Serrão Santos, and the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Teresa Coelho. Oceano Fresco raised €11.7 million, including €4.2 million from competitive grants and over €7.5 million from the founders, BlueCrow Capital and an international group of seed investors.
