Ocean Aquaculture Hatchery(OAC Hatchery) recently introduced a new project to build a 40,000 m² yellowtail kingfish and meagre hatchery in Carboneras, Spain. The new facility is planned to be built on the site of the former thermal power plant and create approximately 65 direct jobs alongside the business logistics center. The hatchery will supply four offshore platforms located off the coasts of Adra and Mazarrón.
Supported by the Dutch investment group Indofin, the project, encompassing the hatchery, offshore cages, a processing plant, and an operations center, represents an investment of over EUR 300 million. It has been deemed strategic at the European level for its low carbon footprint and contribution to the blue economy.
The project was presented at the Carboneras Town Hall with the participation of Cees de Brun and Juan Fernández Aldana, CEO and project coordinator of OAC Hatchery; Salvador Hernández, mayor of Carboneras; and Isabel Romero, representative for the Just Transition Agreements in Andalusia. Hernández highlighted the initiative as part of the city’s economic diversification, stating that it “will complement traditional activities like fishing without competing with them, while generating sustainable employment and advancing toward a greener industrial model.”
