The Ecuadorian shrimp industry continues to battle organized crime attacks. So far this year, there have been 48 criminal events against the shrimp sector in the provinces of Guayas and El Oro, leaving 31 people injured, according to statistics from the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA). However, this number could triple because some crimes are not reported for fear of reprisals.
Compared to the same period last year, theft from production units has increased by 35%, feed by 100%, and the number of injuries has doubled, the CNA reported.
The National Chamber of Aquaculture said that understands the political context that the country is experiencing but asks the government not to give a truce to crime, since it is the biggest problem that Ecuador is going through.
