Nueva Pescanova Group produced the fifth generation of octopus (Octopus vulgaris) raised in captivity and plans to commercialize the world’s first aquaculture-raised octopus in summer 2022. Juveniles of this octopus species were produced for the first time at the Instituto Español de Oceanografía in Spain in 2018 thanks to an improved protocol that comprises zootechnical and nutritional advances. Nueva Pescanova owns the patent and is currently developing the method for commercial-scale production.

The announcement was made during the opening of Pescanova Biomarine Center, a new private aquaculture research center in Spain.
