Cyclone Yaas hits shrimp farms on India’s east coast

Tuesday, June 1, 2021

Cyclone Yaas and the resultant floods have shattered the hopes of thousands of shrimp and fish farmers in Odisha and West Bengal, on India’s east coast. Shrimp and fish in farms and ponds have been washed away, causing huge losses to the farmers, local news reported.

Rajarshi Banerji, president of the Seafood Exporters Association of India, reported to local news that most of the shrimp was ready for harvest in the area and 25-30% was lost. Other preliminary reports suggest that about 3,000 hectares of shrimp farms along Odisha and West Bengal has been submerged.

Cyclone Yaas, which intensified into a “very severe cyclonic storm”, hit the states of West Bengal and Odisha, as well as lashing southern Bangladesh. This is the second cyclone to hit the country in a week, after Cyclone Tauktae killed more than 150 people.
