Benchmark’s new incubation center in Iceland on track for opening in June 2021
Wednesday, April 21, 2021
Benchmark Genetics’ Icelandic operation is significantly increasing its production capacities of Atlantic salmon ova by constructing a new incubation center next to the existing broodstock and incubation facilities in the town of Vogarvik, on the southwest coast of the island.
Planned to be in operation from mid-June 2021, the new facility will have an annual production capacity of 300 million ova. Last November, the ground was broken, and during April, the walls are being raised. AKVA in Denmark is supplying the equipment, and a local entrepreneur is in charge of the construction.
The new facility will hold 10,000 single incubators, each with eggs from a single female. This system secures the highest levels of biosecurity in line with the company’s standards.
“The new incubation center is based on the existing production philosophy of Benchmark to ensure the highest levels of biosecurity and supply of high-quality and genetically improved eggs all year round,” said Jonas Jonasson, head of Production in Benchmark Genetics and CEO of the Icelandic operations.
