ProTerra Maroc, a German and Moroccan company, started a tilapia farm in Dakhla, in southern Morocco, with Til-Aqua genetics lines. The company invested in a seawater farm in Dakhla to market products free of antibiotics, hormones and chemicals according to the ASC and BAP standards.

ProTerra's aquafarm project is comprised of a broodstock maturation station with fish that were genetically cross-bred to adapt to salinity and that are reared in ponds on the Atlantic coast with a salinity of 35 ppm. Broodstock were supplied by Til-Aqua and are a result of a ten-year crossbreeding process and consists of male Y-Y and female Y-Y as well as mixed breeders.

The farm will supply tilapia broodstock to the North African region. ProTerra will also grow tilapia and plans to produce 100,000 tons of tilapia per year for consumption in the external market with an organic ecological system based on locally produced feed from microalgae and plants such as moringa. The company invested €20 million which will allow the creation of 200 permanent jobs, with the main target markets being Germany, Asia, Europe and the United States.
