BioMar has now opened a state-of-the-art marine fish larval trial unit that not only allows for larval rearing but also the production of live feed.
Dec 31, 2019 — INVE Thailand, part of Benchmark, has become the first company in Asia to be awarded a certificate to export its Artemia cysts, feed and health products into Ecuador. It will now be used as a reference in the region for other companies seeking similar certificates. The announcement came after three full days of audits by COTERI (Technical Commission for Import Risk, Ecuador) at the company’s factory in Thailand.

Research will initially focus on breeding, genetic improvement, nutrition and health of commercially important aquaculture species in the Zhejiang province, including the swimming crab, large yellow croaker, pomfret and cuttlefish.

Benchmark Genetics Chile, will produce eggs in the Chaicas high-quality biosecure land-based facilities in Chile, with back-up from Benchmark Genetic’s land-based breeding operations in Iceland and genetic technology from Benchmark’s Akvaforsk Genetics in Norway.

The new £26.5 million hatchery at Inchmore in Glenmoriston replaces a much smaller hatchery which had been on the site more than 38 years, expanding the workforce from 5 to 18.

The new formulation has been developed to simplify the weaning process and provides key nutritional components for the initial stages of larval development. “Feed digestibility is of great importance, especially at the initial stages of larval development when the digestive tract is under development. Larvae fed with Natura show superior acceptance of formulated feed.”

Dec 31, 2019 — Hanping Wang, who manages The Ohio State University’s Ohio Center for Aquaculture Research and Development, has succeeded in raising faster-growing fish by artificially mating them in a not so typical way. Inside cool water-filled tanks in southern Ohio, the laws of nature are being defied: female yellow perch mate with other female yellow perch; male bluegills with other male bluegills. On average, the resulting offspring reach market size six months faster than bluegills or yellow perch bred out of standard male-female mating. That’s because among yellow perch, females grow quicker than males; among bluegills, males faster than females.
Dec 31, 2019 — Trout poached from Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery were anything but a free feed for a Rotorua teenager who has paid dearly for his catch. Nineteen year-old Duncan Scowen pleaded guilty in the Rotorua District Court to charges of fishing in hatchery ponds without a licence and being on the grounds unlawfully.He was fined a total of NZ$700, as well as prosecution and court costs.
Oct 9, 2019 — In 2017, the commercial fleet caught about 47 million hatchery-produced salmon in Alaska. This harvest was worth an estimated $331 million in first wholesale value and $162 million in ex vessel value.Hatcheries contributed 21% of the 2017 statewide commercial salmon harvest, which is the lowest percentage of hatchery-produced fish in the harvest since 1995. The lower hatchery contribution was due to the strong wild stock return in 2017, which was the third highest wild stock commercial salmon harvest in Alaska history.
