Dec 31, 2019 — In a move that would substantially increase ADM’s aquaculture footprint, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) announced that it has agreed to terms granting exclusivity in discussions to purchase Neovia. The 100 percent cash deal has an approximate enterprise value of €1.535 billion, subject to customary adjustments.
ASIA PACIFIC - Pilmico gains majority interest in Gold Coin for US$413 million
Dec 31, 2019 — AEV’s food subsidiary Pilmico International Pte Ltd announced its acquisition of a majority stake in one of Asia’s largest privately-owned agribusiness corporations, Gold Coin Management Holdings Limited, as it expands its feeds business in the Asia Pacific region.
USA - trū Shrimp and Oceanic Institute to develop a nucleus shrimp breeding program in the US
Dec 31, 2019 — The trū® Shrimp Company has signed an agreement with Oceanic Institute of Hawai`i Pacific University to develop a nucleus shrimp breeding program in the US. The agreement confirms Oceanic Institute as the supplier of Pacific white shrimp breeding stock selected and developed exclusively for trū Shrimp.
DENMARK - BioMar expands its R&D capabilities in the hatchery feed sector
Dec 31, 2019 — BioMar has increased its research capabilities in hatchery with an expansion of its Aquaculture Technology Centre, ATC Hirtshals facility in Denmark. BioMar has now opened a state-of-the-art marine fish larval trial unit that not only allows for larval rearing but also the production of live feed.
THAILAND - INVE Aquaculture, 1st Asian company to be granted certificate for direct import into Ecuador
Dec 31, 2019 — INVE Thailand, part of Benchmark, has become the first company in Asia to be awarded a certificate to export its Artemia cysts, feed and health products into Ecuador. It will now be used as a reference in the region for other companies seeking similar certificates. The announcement came after three full days of audits by COTERI (Technical Commission for Import Risk, Ecuador) at the company’s factory in Thailand.

CHINA/SCOTLAND - Stirling and Ningbo universities team up for aquaculture research
Dec 31, 2019 — A new agreement between the Universities of Stirling and Ningbo, in China, will see aquaculture staff and students share knowledge and collaborate on research and teaching projects. Research will initially focus on breeding, genetic improvement, nutrition and health of commercially important aquaculture species in the Zhejiang province, including the swimming crab, large yellow croaker, pomfret and cuttlefish.
CHILE - Benchmark and AquaChile join forces to create salmon breeding operation
Dec 31, 2019 — Benchmark and AquaChile have signed an agreement to form a breeding and genetics joint venture. Benchmark Genetics Chile, will produce eggs in the Chaicas high-quality biosecure land-based facilities in Chile, with back-up from Benchmark Genetic’s land-based breeding operations in Iceland and genetic technology from Benchmark’s Akvaforsk Genetics in Norway.
SCOTLAND - New salmon hatchery for Marine Harvest
Dec 31, 2019 — Marine Harvest opened a new hatchery which will grow up to 12 million fish a year and help meet the global demand for Scottish farmed salmon. The new £26.5 million hatchery at Inchmore in Glenmoriston replaces a much smaller hatchery which had been on the site more than 38 years, expanding the workforce from 5 to 18.
INVE launches Natura diet range for early-stage marine fish larvae
Dec 31, 2019 — INVE Aquaculture has launched ‘Natura’, a new diet range for early-stage marine fish larvae. The new formulation has been developed to simplify the weaning process and provides key nutritional components for the initial stages of larval development. “Feed digestibility is of great importance, especially at the initial stages of larval development when the digestive tract is under development. Larvae fed with Natura show superior acceptance of formulated feed.”

SCOTLAND - Scientists make major breakthrough in omega-3 production
Dec 31, 2019 — Study shows that a large variety of invertebrate animals, including corals, rotifers, molluscs, polychaetes and crustaceans, possess enzymes called ‘desaturases’ of a type that enable them to produce omega-3, an ability thought to exist almost exclusively in marine microbes.

USA - Breeding for faster-growing bluegills and yellow perch
Dec 31, 2019 — Hanping Wang, who manages The Ohio State University’s Ohio Center for Aquaculture Research and Development, has succeeded in raising faster-growing fish by artificially mating them in a not so typical way. Inside cool water-filled tanks in southern Ohio, the laws of nature are being defied: female yellow perch mate with other female yellow perch; male bluegills with other male bluegills. On average, the resulting offspring reach market size six months faster than bluegills or yellow perch bred out of standard male-female mating. That’s because among yellow perch, females grow quicker than males; among bluegills, males faster than females.
NEW ZEALAND - Poacher pays high price for trout from hatchery
Dec 31, 2019 — Trout poached from Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery were anything but a free feed for a Rotorua teenager who has paid dearly for his catch. Nineteen year-old Duncan Scowen pleaded guilty in the Rotorua District Court to charges of fishing in hatchery ponds without a licence and being on the grounds unlawfully.He was fined a total of NZ$700, as well as prosecution and court costs.
USA - Strong salmon returns see drop in hatchery fish harvested
Oct 9, 2019 — In 2017, the commercial fleet caught about 47 million hatchery-produced salmon in Alaska. This harvest was worth an estimated $331 million in first wholesale value and $162 million in ex vessel value.Hatcheries contributed 21% of the 2017 statewide commercial salmon harvest, which is the lowest percentage of hatchery-produced fish in the harvest since 1995. The lower hatchery contribution was due to the strong wild stock return in 2017, which was the third highest wild stock commercial salmon harvest in Alaska history.

Oct 9, 2019 — BernAqua is the first company to launch an organic feed for the first larval stages of shrimp. Royal Caviar Nature is a micro-encapsualated feed, available in five sizes, to meet the requirements of larvae from Zoea through PL15.
