Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), the R&D arm of MPEDA, received a patent for mud crab seed production technology.
RGCA established India’s first large-scale mud crab (Scylla serratta) hatchery at Thoduvai, Tamil Nadu in 2004, with an initial production capacity of 1 million per year. Emilio T. Quinitio, scientist at the Aquaculture Department of SEAFDEC rendered consultancy services for the establishment of the hatchery. In 2020, the hatchery capacity was increased to 1.4 million per year. So far, 7.28 million crab instars were produced and supplied from this hatchery to 659 farmers.
MPEDA-RGCA filed for a patent for the mud crab hatchery technology with the Government of India in 2011.
