StofnFiskur hf changed its legal name to Benchmark Genetics Iceland hf as a step in the single-brand strategy of the Benchmark Holdings plc group. StofnFiskur will continue to be the brand used for the Atlantic salmon breeding program and strain operated by the Icelandic company.

Founded in 1991, Benchmark Genetics Iceland is a long-established and trusted provider of improved genetic material to the salmon farming industry in Europe and Chile. With operations located in the southwest corner of Iceland, the structure consists of two separate broodstock facilities, an incubation center and a family production unit. The new Head Office is located in Hafnarfjordur, next to the capital of Reykjavik. In addition to Atlantic salmon, the company also holds a facility for lumpfish juveniles, a complementary product used by salmon farmers for sea lice control.

Although the company’s legal name changed, the enterprise registration number, company structure and ownership remain the same. Jonas Jonasson, CEO of Benchmark Genetics Iceland, said that “this move is a part of Benchmark’s strategy in building a strong unified brand across companies and business areas.”

Benchmark Genetics Iceland is continuing its growth and development. It will soon start constructing a new incubation station in Vogarvik and later this year, a new facility for family production. These investments will further strengthen the operations in Iceland.

“I am very excited to be leading the company into a new era. The name change is a visible symbol of the major commercial and innovation steps we have taken since we joined Benchmark in November 2014,” said Jonasson. “Now, we are looking forward to completing the construction of the incubation station by June this year. The state-of-the-art facility will enable us to significantly increase the all-year-round supplies of biosecure ova to our worldwide customer base including our new customers in the growing land-based industry.”
